Rising Damp was a sitcom made by Yorkshire Television. It ran for four series, totalling twenty-eight episodes.

Rising Damp was a sitcom, made by Yorkshire Television staring Leonard Rossiter as Rigsby – a mean landlord and his tenants.

Rigsby was the landlord of a small block of flats, where he also lived with his cat Vienna. He was distracted by one of his tennents, Miss Jones, and was often trying to win her affections.

The other two main characters were also Rigsby’s tennents.

Alan was a medical student who Rigsby would often criticise the way he looked because he had long hair, among other things. He only appeared in the first three series, having moved out by the final series due to Beckinsdale’s other filming commitments.

Philip, who would end up sharing a room with Alan due to Rigsby’s penny pinching ways, was a black student who Rigsby was prejudice against – believing him to be the son of an African chief. In the early episodes, he was believed to be a love interest of Miss Jones, who certainly wanted to peruse him but Rigsby would get in the way with his jealousy (she mentioned in one episode that he would cut her water off)
