Welcome to our section looking at the Channel Four Television Corporation. As the name suggests, Channel Four was the forth, national terrestrial service to be transmitted in the UK. It first went on the air on the 2nd November 1982
Whilst often referred to as the fourth terrestrial channel to go on the air, this is not strictly true as S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru or Channel Four Wales) launched the day before. S4C is a Welsh language service which took the place of Channel Four in homes located in Wales until the launch of digital terrestrial television when both services came available. It should also be noted that there were local TV channels about before Channel Four went on the air, available via cable television services.
Channel Four gets its funding mostly via advertising on its services, it is however a non-profit organisation so all money goes back into programming.
This section will take a look at the history of Channel Four, and the presentation on its channels, past and present, along with looking at news and weather presentation and other related Channel Four content. We will also look at the various other channels from the corporation over the years
