Welcome to our section looking at Independent Television, more commonly referred to as ITV, which launched on the 25th September 1955. ITV was the first commercial station in the UK and today remains the largest and most watched commercial channel.
Unlike the BBC, ITV is funded via advertising revenue on its channels, it does not get any money from the license fee. This has lead to the channel producing or commissioning programming which gets a higher audience share compared to that of the BBC. Like the BBC, ITV also has public service obligations, such as a news service, which cost more than they receive in advertising revenue.
ITV traditionally has also been structured very differently to the BBC in that it was set up as individual regions, each served by a separate ITV company who would be responsible for local programmes, with some bigger ITV companies providing programmes to be shown across the whole, or different regions of the network.
This section will take a look at the history of ITV, and the companies that have made it happen, past and present, along with looking at news and weather presentation and other related ITV content. We will also look at the various ITV channels over the years and the presentation on those channels.
