Welcome to this section looking at the flagship BBC channel , BBC One.
BBC One launched as BBC 1 on the 20th April 1964 after the formation of a second BBC channel (aptly named BBC 2). Previously, the channel had been known as the BBC Television Service or BBC TV. As much of the company could not view the new BBC 2 service, the first BBC 1 ident would not mention it as BBC 1, simply referring to it as BBC still.
