The show ran for five series, totaling 44 episodes, all of which still exist. It was written by Roy Clarke, who had also written the world's longest running sitcom - Last of the Summer Wine as well as the popular Open All Hours. The show is centred around a character called Hyacinth Bucket, played by Patricia Routledge and her long suffering husband, Richard, played by Clive Swift. Hyacinth likes to think she is better than most of the people around her and was always looking to be seen as a pillar of the community. She was snobbish - making out her name to be bouquet rather than Bucket, she was always trying to make out she had more breeding and money than she actually had, much to the fustration of her husband who would be dragged along with her plans (and often footing the bill). Living next door to the Bucket's was Elizabeth, a mild mannered woman who would often be bullied by Hyacinth into coming over for coffee. Elizabeth was always extremely nervous around Hyacinth, requiring the use of a beaker so not to spill her drink or to damage one of Hyacinth's Royal Doulton with the hand painted periwinkles. Elizabeth is later joined by her brother, Emmet, who has the same issues being around Hyacinth, often resorting to hiding from her to avoid her singing at him. Hyacinth has family in the form of three sisters. The one she would like to be closest to is Violet, who she will often drop her name into conversation with others, often adding that she has a Mercedes and room for a pony. Unfortunately for Hyacinth, she had most contact with her other two sister. The only downside was Bruce, Violet's husband, who was known to be a cross-dresser. Her sister Daisy, is thought to be quite common compared to Hyacinth, she lives in a council house with her lazy, often shirtless husband Onslow. Living them is her beloved daddy, who would often get himself into trouble and need to be rescued - mostly in embarrasing circumstances. Also living with them is her other sister Rose, she had a constant string of different boyfriends (most of whom were married) and would dress in short dresses. Rose also had a thing for the vicar and would chase him whenever she got close.
